This is a future version of Emoticon Writer staring across a rip in causality at the present version of himself, who has not yet become a published author. 

This might also be the present version of Emoticon Writer staring across a rip in causality at the past version of himself, who has not yet become a published author, but I’m not too terribly sure it’s either one of those. 

Perhaps it’s the third thing.
